Biographie
Benoit BOTTALA alias STEEK, artiste autodidacte né le 20 Mai 1983, entre dans le monde du graffiti à la fin des années 90. Grâce à une scène Guadeloupéenne déjà très développée. C’est grâce aux rencontres de graffeurs de la scène locale et internationale (Noé two, Mist, Ceet, Keag, Done, Warner, Dougy, Clek, Xela, Basik, Locks, Tek…), et à l’évolution des modes et des milieux artistiques que STEEK évolue, progresse, se professionnalise et décide en 2006 de se consacrer entièrement à sa passion, la peinture.
Son besoin d’ouverture le pousse à voyager, rencontrer, échanger, apprendre… Il participe à plusieurs expositions individuelles et collectives: Canada (Montreal), USA (New-York Pool Art Fair 2012), Caraïbes (Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Guadeloupe, Barbade), France (Fondation EDF – Prix du Graffiti).
Ses derniers voyages en date l’amène à Miami durant Art Basel et se retrouve en plein Wynwood pour y peindre un mur en collaboration avec le graffeur Yelow (Paris). Sur l’autre partie du batiment on y retrouve Dourone, Bikismo et Apitatan. Mais également à Madrid pour le Meeting Of Style ainsi qu’en Corée du Sud pour le Daegu Internationnal Bodypainting Festival.
En 2010, il découvre le bodypainting, et devient en juillet 2017 le nouveau Champion du Monde de Bodypainting (catégorie aérographe pro) en Autriche. En 2018 il devient Double Champion du Monde, seulement un artiste avant lui avait réussi cet exploit. Une performance jamais réalisée par un artiste Français jusque-là.
Utilisant la bombe aérosol sur mur et l’aérographe en bodypainting, c’est tout naturellement qu’il décide de rassembler ses deux outils lors de la réalisation de ses toiles, poussant son imagination à aller toujours plus loin pour y exploiter un maximum les possibilités matérielles de cette combinaison.
Born in 1983, Benoit BOTTALA aka STEEK, is a self taught artist and gets into the graffiti world in the late 90’s. At this time the spray paint sticks to his hand and doesn’t leave him since. Thanks to great connexions with other graffiti artists from the Guadeloupean and international scene (Noé two, Mist, Ceet), and also thanks to this artistic field evolution, Steek improves, gets more and more professional and decides in 2006 to dedicate himself to his passion, painting.
This young artist feels the need to explore the world, meet other artists, exchange, learn…He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Canada (Montreal), USA (New-York Pool Art Fair 2012), Caribbean (Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin, Guadeloupe, Barbados), France (Fondation EDF – Prix du Graffiti).
His last travel leads him to Miami during Art Basel in the middle of Wynwood to paint a wall with the graffiti artist Yelow from Paris. On the building where they painted you can find Dourone, Bikismo and Apitatan. And to Madrid for the Meeting of Style and in South Korea for the Daegu International Bodypainting Festival.
In 2010 he is introduced to bodypainting. In july 2017 he becomes the new World Bodypainting Champion in Austria (airbrush category) and in 2018 he did it again and he becomes Double World Champion, only one artist before him already did that and also the first french artist reaching this level.
Using the spray paint on wall and the airbrush on body, he naturally chooses to mix both of them on canvas, pushing his imagination and the capacities of his tools together.
Regardless of what he paints on : murals, canvas, textile, body… Steek is a very contemporary artist who always keeps a critical eye on the society evolving… for better or for worse.
Démarche Artistique - Artistic Approach
Artiste autodidacte, son inspiration première est la Guadeloupe pour ses couleurs ainsi que la femme multi éthnique pour ses sujets d’expression. Aussi bien le sujet que le medium, c’est en peignant la Femme dans toutes ses représentations que Steek traite à son échelle des discriminations du système soit disant égalitaire au niveau des genres humains.
Attiré depuis toujours par les murales, son style est aujourd’hui un mélange de portraits et de corps qui se complètent, qui se voient superposés par de très fines écritures.
Cette technique est pour lui une manière de s’exprimer, faire parler la peinture en proposant différentes couches de lectures et de textures.
Travailler couche par couche lui permet de laisser place à l’improvisation ainsi que l’inspiration du moment.
Sa priorité artistique n’est pas de faire uniquement du beau mais avant tout de créer chez le «spectateur» une réflexion, une interrogation le tout agencé dans une esthétique plaisante et reconnaissable.
Quel que soit le support: mur, toile, textile, corps….Steek est un artiste de son temps, qui garde un oeil critique sur la société qui bouge…pour le meilleur et pour le pire.
As a self-educated artist, Guadeloupe Island and woman are his first inspiration, Guadeloupe for its diversity of colors and woman who covers several ethnic groups for her diversity of expression.
Through woman painting Steek enjoys reporting the discrimination and the inequality of the human being life.
Although he has always been attracted by murals painting, his actual style is a combination of portrait and body built to become one piece where you can see appear some thin writings.
Working layer by layer give him the opportunity to give way to improvisation and spontaneity.
This technic is the way for Steek to fully express himself, and provides several levels of reading of the artwork through several layers of writing.
Although beauty is important on his artwork, first of all, Steek wants to make his public think , question himself through a well arranged, enjoyable and readable beautified style.
Whatever the painting support: wall, canvas, textile or body, Steek is a very contemporary artist who always keep a critical eye on the society on movement for the best and the worst.
